چکیده

Water samples from 78 private potable wells in southern NJ were collected for mercury analysis in 19911992. The wells are located in Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape Map and Ocean Counties. Total mercury concentrations varied from 1 ng/L to over 36 Fg/L. The dominant form in which mercury occurred in the wells sampled was inorganic, although monomethylmercury was present in some wells comprising up to 8% of the total mercury in one ground-water sample. Mercury analyses performed using the EPA Method 245.1 should be interpreted with caution. While this method is generally suited for analyzing waters having elevated mercury concentrations (total mercury levels above 2000 ng/L or 2 μg/L), it is less sensitive and even inadequate for characterizing background mercury levels. INTRODUCTION contamination was first discovered. The levels found In the late 1980's, private drinking water wells reported in the state. In fact, there are no reports in in Atlantic County, NJ were found to contain levels of the available literature showing similar levels of mercury above the 2 micrograms per liter (μg/L or mercury in ground water. parts per billion) maximum contaminant level (MCL) NJ Department of Environmental Protection set by US Environmental Protection Agency and Energy (NJDEPE) responded to the Atlantic (USEPA). As a result of these findings, the Atlantic County findings by launching an intensive sampling County Department of Health (ACDOH) instituted an campaign in cooperation with local health officials. aggressive county-wide sampling program to To date, water samples collected from NJDEPE and determine the magnitude and extent of this county health departments from more than 250 contamination. Results of their sampling showed potable domestic wells completed in the upper that mercury contamination is widely distributed Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer system in the NJ Coastal throughout Atlantic County. Mercury levels as high as 40 μg/L have been observed by ACDOH since the by local health officials in this county are the highest

Selenium and its distribution in edible mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis collected from different locations

Mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis collected and bought from different locations (Slovenian coastline, Italy and NE Pacific) were analysed by techniques of hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS) and liquid chromatography coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) in order to assess selenium (Se), its distribution and Se species in raw and cooked s...

A Comparison of GC-ICP-MS and HPLC-ICP-MS for the Analysis of Organotin Compounds Application

An inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) was used as a detector for gas chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of organotin compounds. ICP-MS is a highly sensitive detector with detection limits in the pg ng range, as well as enabling calibration by isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS). Calibrating using isotopically labeled organotin...

Contaminants in Muscle and Liver tissue of Juvenile White Sharks, Carcharodon carcharias, from the Southern California Bight

The Southern California Bight (SCB) is thought to be a nursery ground for the White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) in the eastern north Pacific. Because of their proximity to highly urbanized coastline in the SCB, juvenile White Sharks are potentially exposed to relatively high levels of trace elements, heavy metals, and organochlorines. To assess potential exposure levels, concentrations of 17...

Speciation analysis of mercury by solid-phase microextraction and multicapillary gas chromatography hyphenated to inductively coupled plasma-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry.

This paper reports the development of an analytical approach for speciation analysis of mercury at ultra-trace levels on the basis of solid-phase microextraction and multicapillary gas chromatography hyphenated to inductively coupled plasma-time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Headspace solid-phase microextraction with a carboxen/polydimethylsyloxane fiber is used for extraction/preconcentration o...

Direct Determination of Total Arsenic and Arsenic Species by Ion Chromatography Coupled with Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

The simultaneous determination of As(III), As(V), and DMA has been performed by ion chromatography (IC) coupled with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The separation of the three arsenic species was achieved by an anionic separator column (AS 7) with an isocratic elution system. The separated species were directly detected by ICP-MS as an element-selective detection method....
